Public Records Lawsuites And Much More
Maricopa county Sheriff fell recently under sharp critisisim from his political opponents as well as from behalf of number of public activist groups for his alleged questionable practices regarding law enforcement. The question is: does the sheriff himself act in compliance with the law when fighting for supremacy of law in the jurisdiction he is in charge of, or is it just a popularity race?
His latest term in office is believed to be marked by some questionable investigations against other officials as well as certain lawsuits that would cost dear to the county’s community – take, for example, alone a public records lawsuit against county supervisors for failing to disclose e-mails and text messages coming through mobile phones of a large group (over 35) of the county officials – unreasonable demand, which by some estimates might cost the county over $US 900,000.
Here are the facts that raise concern: the Department of Justice Department currently is trying to verify the allegations of racially biased attitude of the sheriff towards illegal immigrants, while other sources of the information allege the FBI has been checking up the information over the official’s possible abuse of power. At the same time the Labor Department is being urged to probe into the wrongful denial of overtime pay for detention officers. Of course, these are but allegation, but from the other hand, according to the information gathered from public records, by this time the Sheriff’s Office was ruled by courts to pay over $30.5 million in compensation claims that were settled to defendants during all terms of the present Maricopa county sheriff’s holding his high position in law enforcement since the year 1993.
